Gu Pei was discussing the changes at Jin City No.1 Middle School with Gu Yang when he heard his name called out. He turned around to see a familiar girl approaching.
“Gu Pei, you’re back!”
The girl, surprised, jogged towards him.
Gu Yang, Gu Jin, and the others exchanged puzzled glances, trying to recall who she was.
Gu Pei looked at the girl in front of him, who was now more mature and stylish, with heavy makeup. He hesitated before asking, “Xu Niannian?”
He barely recognized her. Xu Niannian, who had once been a cool, delicate, and somewhat pretentious girl, had transformed into someone much more sophisticated and charming.
Xu Niannian approached and asked, frowning slightly, “Gu Pei, why did you suddenly transfer to the capital for your third year of high school? Is it because of me and Sun Daoming…”
Gu Pei had long moved past those old issues. To him, Xu Niannian was now just an ordinary classmate, nearly a stranger. “It has nothing to do with you. It’s a matter concerning my family.”
He didn’t elaborate and started to walk away, but Xu Niannian stopped him.
“Gu Pei, Sun Daoming and I have broken up,” she said.
Gu Pei, indifferent, responded with, “Oh, happy breakup.”
Xu Niannian seemed genuinely pleased. “You still care about me, right? I was just angry when I was with him. I still have feelings for you…”

Gu Pei frowned, feeling a wave of distaste. He moved away from her. “Don’t flatter yourself.”
Seeing his reaction, Xu Niannian looked hurt. “I let you down before. I understand if you hate me. But now, it’s my turn to pursue you!”
Gu Pei, shocked, quickly stepped behind Gu Yang. “No, please don’t.”
Gu Yang, standing beside him, added firmly, “Xu Niannian, please leave my brother alone.”
Xu Niannian clenched her teeth and said, “Sister Gu Yang, this is between me and Gu Pei. Gu Pei, I know you’ll get into a university in the capital. Don’t worry, I’ll be there to find you.”
Gu Pei felt a pang of dread. He wondered if it was too late to apply to Qionghai University or Harbin University instead.
After hearing about Xu Niannian’s persistence, Gu Pei’s childhood friend, Feng Duxing, updated him on Xu Niannian and Sun Daoming’s situation over the past year.
Originally, Xu Niannian and Sun Daoming had been together with less-than-pure intentions—Xu Niannian to provoke Gu Pei and Sun Daoming to spite him. But when Gu Pei transferred schools, the two grew disillusioned and eventually broke up.
Xu Niannian’s academic performance, once slightly better than Gu Pei’s, had declined since his departure. She now couldn’t even qualify for Hua University or other top institutions in Beijing. Her only option was to enter Capital Drama University through the arts examination.
When Gu Pei learned this, he felt a wave of relief. He had been worried that Xu Niannian might end up at Hua University and constantly disrupt his life. Now, Xu Niannian was aiming for a career in the entertainment industry.
However, Feng Duxing had more bad news for Gu Pei. Xu Niannian had showcased her talent in eSports and joined a renowned professional eSports club in China—the CNM Club.
This was the same club that Gu Pei had always aspired to join, apart from his former favorite, Team Blue Whale, which had been disbanded for years and had become a legend in the eSports world. Gu Pei had set his sights on CNM Club as his new goal, hoping to achieve it during the summer vacation.
Now, learning that Xu Niannian had joined CNM Club, Gu Pei felt a wave of discouragement.
