Jiang Feng and Wu Minqi were lucky, they only had to wait for about five or six minutes before a relatively empty bus arrived. There weren’t many passengers on the bus, and there were plenty of empty seats everywhere, so the two of them effortlessly found two adjacent seats to sit down.
“Qiqi, are we going to your high school now? Will your high school be open?” Jiang Feng asked curiously.
“It depends. If the seniors haven’t been let out for vacation, it will be open. If they’re on vacation, then the school gates will probably be closed and we won’t be able to get in,” Wu Minqi replied.
Jiang Feng: ….
Indeed, he had actually forgotten that high schools had seniors, a group of creatures even more pitiful than office workers.
“But it’s almost Chinese New Year now, so I reckon the snack shops near the school gate are likely closed. I’m not sure about the noodle shop near the back gate though. Fengfeng, didn’t you say before that our local spicy intestine noodles are really delicious? I think the ones from that shop are the best,” Wu Minqi enthusiastically recommended.
“When we get there, let’s take a look,” he said.
“Yeah!”
When talking about topics related to high school, Jiang Feng suddenly remembered Zhang Xi, whom he had met during the Good Taste competition; she had played a part in the completion of the “Turn Enemies into Friends” side quest. Now, considering the time of year, she must be a senior and facing the college entrance examinations in June.
“By the way, Minqi, do you still remember Zhang Xi?” Jiang Feng suddenly asked.
This name seemed somewhat unfamiliar to Wu Minqi; her interactions with Zhang Xi had been minimal during the competition, and it took her a moment to recall who that was.
“Is it that high school student from the Good Taste cooking competition? I remember she came to eat at Healthy Stir-fry Restaurant afterward,” Wu Minqi said, somewhat uncertain.
“That’s right, her. She’s a senior this year and will soon be sitting for her college exams,” Jiang Feng said.

“What about her?” Wu Minqi didn’t understand why Jiang Feng suddenly brought up Zhang Xi.
“I remember last year when she came to our restaurant, she said she wanted to be a chef at Taifeng Building in the future,” Jiang Feng said with a smile.
Wu Minqi also smiled, “That must have been just a casual remark.”
A casual remark? Jiang Feng thought back to the “Turn Enemies into Friends” side quest and felt it probably wasn’t just a casual remark.
If all went well, by this June Taifeng Building’s kitchen could gain a new female employee.
After spending more than half an hour on the bus, Jiang Feng and Wu Minqi finally arrived at Wu Minqi’s high school alma mater.
The area around the school had many apartment buildings, both new and old, and there was a real estate development in progress not far away. The streets were almost empty, and many of the stores were closed, leaving only a few stationery shops and noodle restaurants open, looking quite desolate.
There were people in the school’s security office; it was clear that the seniors had not yet been let out on vacation and were buried in their studies in the classroom. Jiang Feng and Wu Minqi initially wanted to look around inside the school, but the gatekeeper uncle diligently refused to let outsiders in during class time, suggesting they should wait to visit until school was out.
Jiang Feng couldn’t help but ask one more question and learned that today was the last day of classes for the seniors; after school, they would be able to embrace a brief but blissful winter vacation.
Since they couldn’t enter the school, Wu Minqi led Jiang Feng on a walk around the vicinity of the school.
“Most of the houses here are designated for the school’s district, so there aren’t many people around when school is out. My sister-in-law is planning to buy an apartment in this area, saying it will be convenient for when her child goes to school, but the prices are quite high and she’s still hesitating,” Wu Minqi took on the role of a tour guide.
“Both my parents graduated from this high school, my mom said these stationery stores were here when she was in high school, and the owners haven’t changed since then.”
“This area is mostly filled with noodle shops, fried chicken and skewer joints, and bubble tea shops. Actually, our high school cafeteria serves pretty decent food, so small stir-fry restaurants don’t last long.”
“Here…”
Wu Minqi led Jiang Feng and showed him every place she remembered, even taking a detour to the back door to check if her favorite noodle shop had closed. Seeing that it was closed, Wu Minqi felt a bit disappointed.
“This place used to stay open until New Year’s Eve,” Wu Minqi couldn’t help turning back as she left, hoping that in the next moment the owner would come out and open for business, “The year I was in my senior year of high school, I had classes until New Year’s Eve morning, and I ate lunch here.”
Jiang Feng originally wanted to comment, to condemn the school’s terrible practice of having classes until New Year’s Eve, not giving students or teachers a holiday. But then he thought back to his own senior year of high school when, even though they hadn’t had classes until New Year’s Eve, they had started the semester on the fourth day of the new year, and he suddenly decided to keep silent and refrain from commenting.
After wandering around, Wu Minqi checked her phone and found that there was still over an hour until school let out, so she took Jiang Feng to a bubble tea shop that they had discovered while wandering, a little distance away from the school, and they sat down.
As soon as the two cups of hot bubble tea were served, Jiang Feng felt like he was back in high school, skipping classes with his girlfriend and running to the bubble tea shop by the school gate.
Although he never had the chance to have a high school romance, by the time he was ready to date, it was already too late.
So it’s true what they say, time waits for no one, you should have your early romance as early as possible.
Wu Minqi had been talking all the way and was quite thirsty by now; she took several big sips of her bubble tea as soon as it arrived at the table. Seeing that Jiang Feng hadn’t made a move, she asked, “Fengfeng, are you bored?”
“Ah? No, I was just thinking of my high school,” smiled Jiang Feng.
“What was your high school like?” Wu Minqi asked.
“From the outside, it looked quite similar to yours, but seemed a bit smaller,” Jiang Feng said, “My high school was built in the old town, surrounded by schools. There are three high schools, three middle schools, and two elementary schools all packed together, and at dismissal time the roadside would be filled with various vendors. Every time after evening self-study, the area around the school would be jam-packed with cars. The three high schools eventually coordinated to end self-study at staggered times to alleviate the traffic congestion a little.”
“There was a private hospital next to our school that was always busy. In high school, because my stomach was often upset and I had diarrhea, the doctors in the emergency department got to know me.”
“Since there were many out-of-town boarding students at the several high schools, right across from my high school was a street filled with eateries, mostly featuring the cuisine from surrounding counties. On weekends, many boarding students’ parents would come to visit their children, and then those restaurants would be booming, and if you arrived late, there would be no seats left. Actually, the chefs in those restaurants were quite skilled, and even if it wasn’t the weekend, they did good business. When my dad had a shop in Z city, I always wanted him to move it in front of the school.”
“It was quite lively usually, but it would get very quiet during holidays, and even quieter during the New Year. During the New Year celebrations, there were hardly any shops open in our streets, not even breakfast places, and you couldn’t buy breakfast when New Year’s approached.” Jiang Feng suddenly realized that he actually missed his old high school life a bit.
When he was in high school, he used to dream about graduating quickly and going to college to slack off.
“Sounds like so much fun, I want to go see it too,” Wu Minqi said with longing.
“Whenever you’re free, I’ll take you to Z city to let you taste our local specialties,” Jiang Feng said with a smile.
“Sure.”
“By the way, Fengfeng, how about I take you to the school cafeteria tonight? We can pay in cash, and I happen to have some with me. Today is the last day of supplementary classes, so the school cafeteria should still be open,” Wu Minqi suggested.
“Sure.”
