…
The Central Continent Capital, [Dawn City].
The helicopter arrived at a military base here.
No sooner had Pei Jinye set foot on the cement ground than someone came to meet him. Without any idle chatter, Pei Jinye was quickly brought into a government building.
The guide knocked on the door, and Xing Tian’s voice came through, “Permission granted, please enter.”
Hearing Xing Tian’s voice in another city felt quite strange.
Even though he knew the whole of Central State was under Xing Tian’s joint management, it still felt as if there were two Xing Tians.
Mr. Han’s office was quite large.
However, it seemed to be filled with a multitude of books.
This made Pei Jinye involuntarily think of the scene when he first conversed with Mr. Han, also amidst a pile of books.
“Sit.”
Mr. Han, holding a book with a black cover, looked up at Pei Jinye and warmly invited him to sit.
The guide respectfully retreated and gently closed the door.
Pei Jinye walked over and sat down.
“It has been less than two months since our last meeting, and the surprises you have given me have been truly extraordinary,” Mr. Han said, seemingly in jest.
Pei Jinye was on guard inwardly but naively said, “I hope it wasn’t a fright.”
“A fright?” Mr. Han couldn’t help but chuckle, shaking his head with a smile, “It seems you’re aware of the severity of this matter.”
Pei Jinye spoke gravely, “I never intended to hide anything… As a member of the Investigation Team, I have an obligation and a responsibility to stop any actions that endanger societal security. If a mere scion of a wealthy family can act so brazenly, then the entire Gongsun Family… Of course, I have no interest in their affairs whatsoever.”
“You are very bold,” Mr. Han observed, looking at him.
Pei Jinye’s gaze was clear, “Mr. Han, you said before that you would grant me the power to kill. I don’t think it was so that I would bow down to those criminal aristocrats.”
Mr. Han stayed silent.
The gaze from behind the glasses silently rested on Pei Jinye’s face.
Pei Jinye did not exhibit any sign of guilt whatsoever.
Mr. Han slowly averted his eyes, having seen all sorts of demons and beasts at his age.
Although he wasn’t arrogant enough to believe he could see through someone’s thoughts at a glance, at the very least, Pei Jinye’s statements and demeanor matched the state of mind Mr. Han desired to see.
Closing the black-bound book, he slowly said, “Years ago, the Gongsun Family produced a hero who became a marshal of the Federation. Although his old subordinates have mostly died or dispersed over the years, it is not sure that some might not still grant them some favor.”
Pei Jinye, with the impassioned righteousness of youth, said, “Does that mean they can disregard the laws of the Federation?”
Mr. Han simply sighed softly without saying much else.
Perhaps in his eyes, it was harmless for someone Pei Jinye’s age to entertain some romantic notions about reality.
“You will understand one day.”
The desk phone rang.
Mr. Han gestured, and Pei Jinye nodded, sitting quietly opposite.
Mr. Han answered the call without a word, but rather listened to what the other person said, then instinctively raised his head to look at Pei Jinye with a look of surprise.
The call ended.
Mr. Han did not speak immediately.
Instead, his fingers caressed the edges of his black-bound book.
After a moment, he spoke.
“Have you had contact with the Knight Order?”
“Yes, Mr. Han,” Pei Jinye candidly replied, “I apologize for only informing you now, but I didn’t have your contact details.”
Mr. Han was taken aback, then chuckled, “Indeed, that’s my fault.”
He looked interestedly at Knight Order.
Hesitating, he said, “But I can assure you that although the Knight Order has an illustrious status in the Federation, in some small places, even a mighty dragon cannot suppress a local snake, do you understand what I’m saying?”
“What are you implying, Mr. Han?” Pei Jinye feigned confusion.
Mr. Han laughed softly, “Do me a favor, and I will help you settle the matter with the Gongsun Family once and for all.”
Pei Jinye raised an eyebrow, suddenly asking, “The favor Mr. Han wants me to do… It isn’t some earth-shattering mission, is it?”
Mr. Han seemed to be amused by Pei Jinye’s cautious attitude, smirking as he said, “What kind of person do you take me for? Coming across someone as talented as you, how could I possibly spare you for a dangerous task? Don’t worry, the mission isn’t difficult.”
“Really not difficult?” Pei Jinye asked tentatively.
Mr. Han caressed the black book cover and smiled, “Not difficult.”
“Please tell me, Mr. Han.”
“I need you to impersonate someone, to do some things on his behalf… This person cannot show himself at the moment due to certain reasons, but there are things that must be done…”
Mr. Han sighed lightly, “Because his family is being threatened. Like you, he has been with me since an early age and encountered similar circumstances. Coerced by an aristocrat, he was forced into killing someone, which led to a backlash from the aristocrat’s powerful backers…
Unfortunately, he wasn’t as lucky as you. My power wasn’t as great at that time, so I could only send him away in secret to become a nameless undercover agent… He has sent me a cryptic message today; someone has kidnapped his sister to force him out into the open.”
“Was it done by the same aristocrat from back then?” Pei Jinye asked.
“That’s correct,” Mr. Han said softly.
Pei Jinye was puzzled, “With your current status, Mr. Han, can’t you handle the adversary?”
“I could intervene, but that wouldn’t be the best solution,” Mr. Han said, looking at Pei Jinye. “I’m giving you this task as a sort of test.”
