That much of a difference?
Zhan Nanqing pursed her lips in response to Zhan Yuanshan’s raging anger. She didn’t dare to act rashly, but she thought what her grandfather said was way, way, way too exaggerated!
She admitted that Qiao Jing was very outstanding, but she and her mother were no slouches either! They were both high-profile socialites, cultivated from a young age in the arts of music, chess, calligraphy, and painting—surely they two combined and multiplied by a hundred couldn’t be less than Qiao Jing, could they?
While Zhan Nanqing was silently scoffing at these thoughts, Zhan Yuanshan “hmphed” and said, “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re thinking. You don’t agree with what I said, right? If it weren’t for an agreement I had with Jing Girl, I’d reveal it and scare you to death!”
Now Zhan Nanqing dared not to purse her lips, only muttering in her heart: Just keep bragging, I don’t believe it at all.
“Hmph!” Zhan Yuanshan saw right through Zhan Nanqing’s thoughts, “If you don’t believe me, then you just need to interact with her more, and you will know whether I’m telling the truth or not.”
He had an agreement with Qiao Jing not to disclose her identity, but if Zhan Nanqing discovered it herself, then it had nothing to do with him.
Although Zhan Nanqing was reluctant to believe that Qiao Jing really had such capabilities, Zhan Yuanshan seemed to be hinting something to her.
Could it be that Qiao Jing truly has some unspeakable secret hidden?
Zhan Nanqing’s curiosity was piqued, so the next day she sought out Qiao Jing again and followed her to the research institute.
“Why are you following me again?” Qiao Jing was somewhat annoyed by Zhan Nanqing and wanted the security at the entrance of Professor Qiao’s Research Institute to throw Zhan Nanqing out, but the problem was that Zhan Nanqing hadn’t done anything to her, and she didn’t have a proper reason to get physical.
“I want to enter the research institute!” Zhan Nanqing felt that only by entering the research institute could she uncover Qiao Jing’s secrets.
Plus, this way she could meet the legendary agricultural magnate, Professor Qiao!

“What?” Qiao Jing was stunned, she really hadn’t expected Zhan Nanqing to come out with something like that.
“I want to enter the research institute!” Zhan Nanqing raised her voice and said.
Qiao Jing eyed Zhan Nanqing, seeing that she didn’t seem to be joking.
“Are you, out of your mind?”
Zhan Nanqing “…”
“I’m serious! My grandfather is always saying how I do nothing all day, idling my life away, and that I’m shaming him. He keeps praising you, saying you’re better than the best. I can’t accept it! I believe that I too have received elite education. Moreover, my mom has been cultivating me from a young age. Piano, archery, calligraphy—I’ve dabbled in all of them. I don’t think I am any worse than you. So if you can enter Professor Qiao’s research institute, then so can I.”
Qiao Jing realized that Zhan Nanqing really did want to enter the research institute.
And she laughed.
“I can enter based on my own capabilities. You enter? What qualifies you? This isn’t a circus troupe. The bits and pieces you’ve learned and only touched on superficially are not needed in my research institute.”
Zhan Nanqing had thought long and hard about how to respond to this from Qiao Jing.
“I can learn! I’m very smart; all my life, I’ve been too lazy to learn. But anything I am willing to learn, I can master faster than ordinary people.”
Zhan Nanqing’s claim wasn’t something Qiao Jing doubted much. After all, Zhan Qipei was an undeniable genius, and as his sister, Zhan Nanqing would have some baseline ability in learning.
“The research institute recruits the best of the best, and the least qualified amongst them is someone like Gan Lanlan. You know Gan Lanlan, he was the top student in his major at the Agricultural University. Do you think you qualify to enter the research institute?”
“I, I—” Of course she wasn’t at Gan Lanlan’s level, but Zhan Nanqing just couldn’t accept it. If Qiao Jing could get in, she was sure she could too.
“Whether or not I can enter Professor Qiao’s research institute isn’t up to you. If you won’t help me get an introduction, I’ll just go find Xinrou’s Second Uncle, Manager Lou.” Zhan Nanqing had everything planned out.
As chance would have it, just as Zhan Nanqing finished speaking, she saw Manager Lou’s car pulling up at the entrance.
“Manager Lou is here!” Zhan Nanqing raised her eyebrow teasingly at Qiao Jing before turning to greet Manager Lou.
“Second Uncle Lou, I have something to discuss with you,” Zhan Nanqing had just finished speaking when she saw Manager Lou’s gaze pass over her and settle on Qiao Jing behind her, bowing slightly, “Good morning.”
Qiao Jing nodded, “Good morning.”
Huh?
Zhan Nanqing was somewhat puzzled by the interaction between Manager Lou and Qiao Jing.
Why did it seem like Qiao Jing was the superior and Manager Lou the subordinate?
As soon as this thought emerged, Zhan Nanqing immediately denied it.
How could that be possible?
“Manager Lou, I’d like to join Professor Qiao’s research institute. Could you introduce me?” Zhan Nanqing spoke while stealthily glancing at Qiao Jing.
Meaning: Who needs your introduction? If you don’t introduce me, she won’t even want to find you.
Hearing Zhan Nanqing say this, Manager Lou was surprised and instinctively looked at Qiao Jing.
Before he could ask, Qiao Jing’s voice rang out.
“Our research institute doesn’t take in useless trash.”
“Who are you calling trash? What makes you think I’m useless? You always say that evidence matters. Aren’t you a member of Professor Qiao’s research institute? Conclusions should be drawn from practice. I haven’t had any practice, so what are you basing your judgment of my worth on?”
Zhan Nanqing’s words made some sense to Qiao Jing.
“That’s the only thing you’ve said since I’ve known you that isn’t completely unreasonable and makes some sense.”
Zhan Nanqing’s mouth twitched wordlessly, “So everything I said before was nonsense?”
Qiao Jing didn’t argue with Zhan Nanqing, but simply handed her the flowerpot she was holding.
“This pot contains a special kind of potato that has just sprouted. You need to take care of it and record your daily report.” Qiao Jing then stuffed the research report into Zhan Nanqing’s hands.
“Some data has already been recorded, and there are samples. From today on, you need to write properly following the previous entries. Every morning, bring it to me for review.”
Zhan Nanqing looked at the flowerpot in her left hand and the research report in her right, her expression bewildered.
“You, you’re having me plant potatoes?!”
Qiao Jing scoffed lightly, “Are you thinking of giving up before you even start? Just now you were bragging to me, saying without any practice, how could you be deemed incapable? Are you contradicting yourself already?”
Hearing Qiao Jing say this, Zhan Nanqing felt defiant.
“Who’s contradicting themselves? It’s just planting a pot of potatoes, just writing a research report, right? For me, that’s a piece of cake!”
“Good.” Qiao Jing said and then looked at Manager Lou, “Go get a few agricultural books.”
“Right away, I’ll go fetch them.” Manager Lou turned and quickly entered the research institute.
Huh? Zhan Nanqing’s eyes followed Manager Lou, feeling something was off. It wasn’t her imagination, was it? Manager Lou really did seem shorter compared to Qiao Jing.
After a silent pause, Zhan Nanqing couldn’t help but ask Qiao Jing, “What exactly is your status at the research institute?”
