- 173 The Fallen One (4) The Gallant Display
There is a large amount of undead in front, and two powerful frost giants at the back. All of my comrades, the other slaves that had finally freed themselves from their slave collars and curses are lying on the ground because of the sudden appearance of the purple mist, but somehow, I didn’t fall asleep. Maybe because of the strong magic resistance that I have had since little.
My body started to emit an irregular heat. It’s been a while since I have a full access to my mana, so it must be because of overusing them. It took everything of me to just continue standing on my feet.
I clench my teeth.
Is this the end?
We finally freed ourselves from the slavery and this is the end?
Even though the others tried their best to survive and persist, and this is the end?
“No, of course, it’s not,” I uttered as I grip at the sword in my hand as hard as I could. I glared at the frost giant behind us as I gather my spirit to fight.
*ROAR!!!!*
One of the frost giants roared in anger because of my glare and rushed in my direction. If I stay at my feet, the frost giant will definitely crush all of us. It could be considered as one of the fastest methods to flee from this suffering. But…
“As if I do so!!!!”
*Boom!*
The large hand of the frost giant land at the place where I was standing before as I ran to the side.
Not good enough.
“I won’t let you kill me and the others,”
I took the opportunity and use the frost giant’s hand as a footing while gathering my mana on my sword and my feet.
“Frost Giants have a weak point. It’s the same place as a knight’s armor,”
I jumped and strikes right at the frost giant’s armpit, slashing it deeply enough to make the hand difficult to use.
*ROAR!!!!!!!*
The frost giant roared in pain, but I won’t let this opportunity goes to waste. Frost giants are not weak, and they are not slow either. I’m impressed with myself to be able to dodge its attacks and even land the attack on him. No, let’s not get distracted.
I need to land the finishing blow.
Enraged, the frost giants attacks became more simple for me to predict, and maybe it’s because of its wound, the attack seems to be even more sluggish than before. I don’t know when my mana will run out so I didn’t waste any time. After glancing at the back and seeing that none of the undead gets near my collapsed allies because of my battle with the frost giant, I make a relieved smile as I jumped with enough mana to create a powerful force.
*Whoosh!*
It’s time to deliver the last strike!
“Die!!!!” I shouted at top of my lungs as I thrust at the frost giant’s eye as powerfully as I could. No matter what creature it is, it’s common knowledge that the eyes are always a critical point to aim for.
Or so it should have.
*Crack!*
“I-It broke!?”
My sword. It broke into pieces right when it get into contact with the frost giant’s eyes. Are those eyes made of metal?
“Ugh!” I groaned as a powerful pain runs through my arm and shoulder. My sword is broken, there’s nothing left to defend myself with.
*Huhuhu*
The frost giant let out a strange voice as its shoulders shooks. When I look at its face, I finally realized that it was not a strange voice.
He’s laughing at me. He’s making fun of me.
*Tch!*
I tried to move my legs, but it seems that I’d used up all of my mana. What should I do?
I took a peek behind and saw that the undead started to get near at the unconscious Solia and the others, they must think that the frost giants are too occupied by me.
This is it.
I closed my eyes as I could no longer muster any strength to fight back.
I’m sorry everyone, but I’ve tried my best.
I’ve given my all.
First, I failed at protecting my country, my homeland, and my people. And now, because of my idea of rebelling in this damned forest, Solia and the others will end up dying because of me.
I’m sorry.
I guess I don’t have the talent and luck in protecting anything.
The frost giant let out a snort as if it was getting bored of my reactions and raised his giant arm and swings it, aiming at me.
With the guild inside my heart, I surrender myself to fate.
.
.
.
Eh?
One second.
Two seconds.
Three seconds.
I waited, but the impact that should have sent me right to the afterlife didn’t come. Not even the cold winds it should be sent because of their momentum.
With hesitation, I opened my eyes.
!!!!!!
“I-Ice!?”
The frost giant’s hand is captured by a block of huge hand-shaped ice that emerged from the ground. Before I could even process properly the sight in front of me, suddenly-
*BOOM!!*
A huge ice-blue boulder crashed to the ground right in front of me. But after a while, it slowly moves and rises. I then realize that that the identity of the thing that crashed right in front of me is not a boulder or a huge chunk of ice.
“An ice golem…?”
An ice golem!?
*BOOM!!*
Another thing crashed next to the ice golem. This time, it’s also a golem, but slightly different. It stands tall and sturdy, with rough and jagged edges forming its frame. Its limbs are thick and sturdy, and its hands are large and squared, almost as if they have been carved from a single block of stone. Its face is crudely carved, with deep lines etched into its cheeks and forehead, giving it a stern and unforgiving appearance. The eyes of a rock golem are dark and empty, like deep voids in the stone, and it exudes a sense of stillness and power.
“A rock golem!?”
*Thud!*
The ice golem slapped the rock golem’s back while shaking its head, as if complaining about its entrance that shocked him. The rock golem then made a shrugging motion, as if saying that it can’t be helped.
The sight of the human-like reactions of the golems in front surprised me very much, but looking at them, I’m positive about one thing. This faint but obvious presence.

I shifted my gaze to the back, and saw that now there is a wagon parking near the place of my allies. A single small girl with a slightly pointy ears is picking up the bodies of Solia and the others to the wagon in hardship, five winter wolves are making a defensive formation to protect the wagon from the army of undead, and a single man clad in a black cloak with a huge glaive on his hand is slowly approaching me with his black horse.
*Thud!*
He lands on the snowy ground with a smile on his face.
“What a wonderful display of valor. I’m quite surprised that there is someone that could resist my powerful illusion mist that took quite a lot of my mana, but I’m too entranced at your gallant figure that I ended up watching for a while. Even though the frost giant is playing with you, the figure of you trying your best to protect your allies is something to be praised and admired upon,” The man uttered the words of praise, but I could only see his mouth that is smiling slightly. He’s hiding his face with his hood, so it makes me wonder whether he’s mocking or praising me.
“You did a very great job. You can leave the rest to me,” He continued with a very gentle tone. My chest tightened, and tears started to fall profusely from my eyes.
From that line alone, the feeling of reassurance enveloped my chest and warms me up.
I’m glad.
I’m very glad.
Solia and the others won’t die because of me.
I’m so glad.
*Boom!* *Boom!* *Boom!*
The fight with the frost giants started as the ice golem and the rock golem rushed to them. The other frost giant that was just watching when the other frost giant battled with me is now joining the fight. I guess the man’s words are right. The frost giant I fought before is just playing with me, if not, it’s impossible for its friend to not help him.
“But, that underestimation made his friend get a considerable damage from you,” The man suddenly uttered as if he were replying to my thoughts.
“Eh?” I exclaimed in surprise. That reaction came out of my mouth not just because of his sudden reply to my thoughts, but because of the sight unfolding in front of me.
The ice golem that purposefully used its magic to capture the left hand of the frost giant, while the rock golem ran straight to the frost giant and strike the right hand of the frost giant that I injured before, making the frost giant to lost its right hand immediately.
“The damage you dealt to the frost giant will be the reason for their win,”
