Lambert jumped up from inside the building, piercing the roof where Johann stood.

「Now that you’ve come this far, don’t ever think that you can escape from me.」

Lambert landed on the rooftop, pointing his greatsword at Johann.

「I’ve come to inquire about your justice.」

「…To begin with, Archangel 『Dantalia of Three Faces』 excels in close-combat. The reason for our retreat back then was that we had another matter to attend to.」

Johann raised his arm.

The giant spirit from the realm of light, Dantalia, gripped the blazing red cross in both of its hands.

「Seeing that you’re already in this holy city, our territory, your fate has been decided. Now, prepare yourself.」

Dantalia, floating behind Johann, brandished the blazing cross.

Lambert stepped forward and dodged the incoming cross.

The floor where he stood a moment ago was blasted along with an exploding sound.

「As expected, that one is a long-distance fighter. Although it’s fast, it’s way too big. I can close the distance immediately, and had I really come to kill you, it wouldn’t be able to save you, its summoner.」

Nevertheless, only a swordsman of Lambert’s caliber could achieve something like that.

In the first place, it was normally impossible for any swordsman to get close due to Dantalia’s reaction speed, which was comparable to that of a human.

Not to mention that there were only a few people who stood equal to Dantalia, a giant otherworldly monster.

Johann’s tactic to use Dantalia as his shield and sword wasn’t wrong.

Johann’s only mistake was that he chose the wrong person as his opponent.

「…」

Johann swung his sleeve, and a hidden longblade unraveled.

Johann stepped forward, ready to unleash a counter with his hidden blade.

Even if he couldn’t kill Lambert, all he needed was to buy some time to let Dantalia catch up and kill Lambert for him.

Lambert didn’t slow down.

He rushed straight toward Johann, seemingly wanting to send the latter flying by ramming him with his armor.

His armor repelled the blade. He didn’t let go of that moment and grabbed Johann’s wrist, twisted it, and broke his bones.

And just like that, his face rammed right on Lambert’s armor from the front, sending him flying backward.

Johann landed on his back, and the collision shattered his mask.

He vomited blood from his mouth, which had been sewn off with only a small opening.

「…You might be a terrifying monster, but you’ve made a mistake. You might want to use me as your hostage, but that’ll be the reason you lose.」

Johann didn’t get knocked out by the impact.

Lambert’s body blow was aiming to stun him.

But the magic formulae carved on Johann’s body was designed to limit the amount of pain that could be felt by the bearer—not to mention that they’d even use narcotics to maintain their heightened state and fight till the bitter end.

Meaning that the summoned spirit wouldn’t disappear unless he died.

The blazing cross would go after Lambert till either one of them died.

「Victory is mi—」

Lambert stopped the blazing cross, which came from behind, with his greatsword.

Lambert’s huge frame was pushed down since the floor on which he stood couldn’t bear the power of Dantalia’s blow.

And just like that, the blazing cross suddenly pierced Dantalia’s chest right in the next moment, raising black fumes as it stabbed its owner.

「…?!」

Dantalia, who only realized that situation a few beats later, could only watch helplessly as its arms dropped powerlessly.

Pained wails resounded from its mouthless face with three holes before it turned into particles of light.

「…Eh?」

Johann also couldn’t believe what he just saw.

He had excellent mental fortitude thanks to his rigorous training, which allowed him to stay composed in any situation… And yet, the reality before him made him doubt his own common sense.

Lambert stood still in his place, moving a little bit to adjust his stance.

This was the counter skill, 『Great Heaven Shift』.

From the very beginning, when their weapons clashed, Lambert guided the cross to glide across his sword’s blade, returning the opponent’s weapon toward the owner.

Although it was simply a swordcraft that redirected the vector using its user’s body as the fulcrum, when Lambert executed such a move, it looked more like magic to Johann.

「That’s it, I guess. Now then, once again…」

Suddenly, a lot of screams could be heard from outside.

Lambert’s sentence was interrupted, and then he looked outside of the building.

The color of the floor was different from normal.

Giant strange bugs with purplish outer shells ran amok in the inner part of the holy city.

「…Are those the Hudo tribe’s 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』?」

Lambert moved toward the edge of the rooftop, looking around at the situation.

The Hudo tribe focused on sorcery research using insects as their medium. During the Eight Countries Unification War, they belonged to Belfis Kingdom, a superpower country in regard to sorcery.

Although Belfis Kingdom was a superpower back then, due to the numerous accidents during dangerous research and a colossal accidental discharge of deadly sorcery, they literally lost their power overnight. In the end, that chaotic situation was used by the other kingdoms to conquer them.

And the main cause of Belfis Kingdom’s downfall was the internal power struggle that used sorcery developed by the Hudo tribe.

Although many of their sorceries—such as the power to see through lies and manipulating someone else’s thoughts and memories were proven to be imperfect—it didn’t change the fact that such power was too much for mere humans to handle.

Kicking down their rivals to cover their crimes, crushing political enemies without an arduous execution process, fabricating lies about one’s achievements to obtain success…

It was a secret art that should never see the light of the day for fear of misuse, and yet, it was an open secret amongst the upper echelon that such dangerous sorceries were widespread, bringing about a never-ending chain of suspicion.

Although the damage was a lot bigger than it was supposed to be thanks to the foreign spy who took advantage of the situation, Lambert only scowled at them since he detested using such methods.

Though every single member of the Hudo tribe was supposed to be executed in accordance to the order of the general who felled Belfis Kingdom back then, it was still a mystery how the supposed lost art was used to kill Viscount Le Gael.

Lambert suspected that someone in 『Devil’s Piper』 used that sorcery.

Since they appeared to use 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』, he couldn’t dismiss it as a coincidence anymore.

「…They want to hunt down the inquisition squad too.」

Lambert muttered in a low voice.
