As he crushed the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 around him, Lambert made full use of his undead trait to feel the strange flow of mana.

Indeed, undeads had innate ability to sense mana.

Normally, the trait was used to hunt down living beings, but in the hands of Lambert—who turned into undead while maintaining his ego—he could utilize such an ability even further to know the nature of the object of his observation.

In short, as long as the other party was a heretic, he would know immediately.

He could also reproduce mana sensing spells used by humans, but those who could skillfully use mana sensing were rare—even during the Eight Countries Unification War.

Although the range of Lambert’s mana sensing wasn’t large, it was enough for him to find the sorcerers who controlled the『Enhanced Demonic Insects』.

The 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 were running amok inside the holy city. Their movements seemed random, but when he looked at the entire herd as a whole, he realized that they came from one direction.

That might be where the new 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 were being birthed from.

The insects then headed toward the current direction—as if following their master’s will.

Lambert stopped in his tracks, looking around to confirm his surroundings.

For a moment, he detected two strange mana presences.

Although their mana wasn’t that powerful, they huddled together as they headed toward the center of the holy city.

It seemed like they were moving through an underground tunnel.

Lambert concluded that there might be an underground network beneath the holy city.

‘But it’s way too suspicious. According to the level of their mana, the chance of them being the sorcerers of 『Devil’s Piper』 is low… Why are they heading toward the center of the holy city instead of evacuating? Do they have some sort of goal? Or do they simply think that it’s much safer underground? …Dammit, I lack the information to confirm. Let’s return later to confirm the situation…’

Another spectacle caught his attention.

Dozens of spirits from the realm of light—which the church referred as angels—were brandishing their swords and killing the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 around them.

Although those spirits were just like Lambert, they had no choice but to use their swords to eliminate the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 since they couldn’t use fire magic.

Maybe those spirits were summoned by one of the Four Great Sages, Matai, whom Lambert met at the execution platform.

Lambert was thankful for his assistance in eliminating the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』, but he had one worry left.

Large-scale summoning like this would literally tell the enemy to target the summoner.

The number of 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 far surpassed the quantity of Matai’s summoned spirits.

But Matai’s summoned spirits were clearly aiming to truly eliminate the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 since his location made it easier for him to see the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』.

That, in turn, made it easier for the enemy to assassinate Matai.

‘…Naturally, Matai himself is clearly an unpleasant person. His cruelty and foul mouth aside, that sadism of him seems to be something innate. But letting Matai die like that would only increase the number of 『Devil’s Piper』’s victims.’

Matai summoned more spirit than when he faced Lambert since this situation required quantity over quality.

Currently, Lambert had three options.

He could subjugate the master of the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』, investigate the underground tunnel, or protect Matai, one of the Four Great Sages.

All of them were urgent matters that couldn’t be left alone. His intuition told him that he was risking the loss of the other two if he prioritized one.

Originally, Matai’s escort, who chased him, was the best option as his source of information. They were also the best choice for temporary cooperation.

As for the problem with the underground tunnel, it suggested that there was some sort of underground movement that Lambert had no idea about.

Lambert grasped his greatsword and ran again.

He headed toward the direction from which the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 came from.

The option that he choose was to kill the source of the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』.

He knew that the other two were equally important.

On the other hand, it might be true that defeating the master of the insects didn’t mean that the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 would stop.

He judged that the remnants of the Hudo tribe were too dangerous compared to the other two.

If it was someone who knew the secrets of the Hudo tribe, the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』  weren’t even the tip of the iceberg.

Anyhow, albeit due to accidents, they were the main cause of the fall of the strongest nation more than two hundred years ago.

The general of the nation, who feared their abilities, went as far as giving the strict order to burn all their books and execute all leaders related to the tribe.

The reason why even the other nations bared their fangs toward the tribe’s ability was purely coincidence.

Their arts were brutal yet completely uncontrollable, thus resulting in the destruction of their own nation.

Their hidden potential had proven to be able to destroy even the strongest nation.

It was easy to imagine that the situation was going to deteriorate even further the longer the insect master was alive.

Lambert found out that the place from which the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 came from was a dilapidated church.

Huge insects kept crawling out from the hole in the wall.

Lambert’s mana sensing detected several humans inside the building.

「…Doesn’t seem to be one versus many.」

A huge hole opened up in one corner of the church.

The corpse of a burned insect flew out from the other side of the hole.

It seemed a battle had already taken place inside.

Lambert slew the 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 that got in his way. He rushed toward the entrance of the abandoned church and then kicked the front door.

In the hall of the abandoned church, people clad in robes from the inquisition squad were facing a slender youth.

There were four stone statues around the members of the inquisition squad. The top of each stone statue formed a wall of light, enclosing the area inside.

It seemed to be a barrier to repel curses. The 『Enhanced Demonic Insects』 that stepped inside the barrier stopped moving at once and turned black in color.

Among the members of the inquisition squad was a blonde-haired girl, who was clearly different from the rest of the squad.

Although she wasn’t wearing the headgear, she wore the same cloth with the Heins faith crest drawn on it to cover her eyes.

「Here we go again, having to face the kind of opponent I hate the most and their unexpected reinforcements on top of that.」

The slender youth spoke with a bored look on his face.

It seemed he was already injured since blood dripped from one of his smashed eyeballs.

…Not to mention that one of his legs was crushed too.

「It seems to be the undead who came a while ago.」

The girl spoke without even turning around to see Lambert.

「This will make it easier since both of them came at the same time. Since we’re in hurry, let’s grant them salvation in the simplest way.」
